The Acting Director of Public Affairs at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Dr. Kwabena Antwi-Konadu, has refuted rumours circulating on social media regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of a student on campus.
The university earlier confirmed in a statement issued on March 6, 2026, that a Level 200 Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) student, Kweku Mensah, died following a road traffic accident on campus the previous day.
The incident occurred at about 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2026, along the road between the Amissah Arthur Language Centre and the Sandwich Lecture Theatre (SWLT).
According to the university, the student was riding on a motorcycle to Oguaa Hall to retrieve his student identification card ahead of a scheduled examination when the motorcycle reportedly collided with an Ayalolo bus. The crash resulted in severe injuries that later led to his death.
Addressing the matter on ATL FM’s Atlantic Wave, Dr. Antwi-Konadu clarified that claims suggesting the student had been ordered by an invigilator to leave the examination venue to retrieve his ID card were untrue.
“It wasn’t the case that he was in the examination hall and an invigilator asked him to go back for his ID card. That claim is not accurate,” he said.
He explained that information gathered from eyewitnesses and individuals close to the student indicated that the deceased realised on his own that he had forgotten his identification card and decided to return to pick it up before the examination began.
“We were informed by eyewitnesses that he was preparing to write the examination when he realized he had forgotten something important. In his estimation, he could quickly go for it and return before the exam started,” Dr. Antwi-Konadu stated.
He added that the student reportedly chose to use a motorcycle to make the trip quickly but unfortunately became involved in the fatal accident. “It was his own decision to go back for the ID card. Unfortunately, while trying to retrieve it, the accident occurred,” he explained.
Dr. Antwi-Konadu further disclosed that the incident has been reported to the University of Cape Coast Police and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) for further investigations. “The police have taken over the matter, and investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident,” he noted.
He confirmed that the body of the deceased has been deposited at the University Hospital’s morgue, while the family of the student has been duly informed.
“When such unfortunate incidents occur, the first responsibility of the university is to get in touch with the family. The Dean of Students, the health services team and other officials have been involved to ensure that the family is properly informed and supported,” he said.
Dr. Antwi-Konadu expressed appreciation to the university’s security personnel, student leaders and other stakeholders who assisted in managing the situation.
“This is a painful loss for the entire university community his classmates, friends, hall mates and the student body. We are grateful to everyone who supported the process to ensure calm and order on campus,” he added.
He urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information about the incident and appealed to the university community to remain calm while investigations continue.
“It is truly a painful moment for all of us, but we must avoid spreading misinformation that could worsen the situation,” he said.
