The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly on Friday, March 6, 2026, joined the rest of the country to commemorate Ghana’s 69th Independence Day with a colourful parade at Victoria Park.
Delivering a speech at the ceremony, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, George Justice Arthur, emphasized that government efforts are focused on restoring confidence in leadership and strengthening national institutions.
The event brought together several dignitaries, including representatives from the Central Regional Coordinating Council, Members of Parliament, traditional leaders from the Oguaa Traditional Area, members of the Metro Security Council, the chief imam, clergy, assembly members, department heads, guests, and members of the media.

Mr Arthur reflected on the historic declaration made by Kwame Nkrumah on March 6, 1957, when he proclaimed, “Ghana, your beloved country, is free forever.” According to him, the moment remains a powerful symbol of Ghana’s freedom and unity.
He noted that prosperity should not only be measured in financial terms but also through access to quality education, healthcare, job opportunities, strong institutions, innovation, and the overall well-being of citizens.
According to the MCE, rebuilding hope among Ghanaians depends largely on trust in leadership and equal opportunities for all citizens.
“When citizens develop trust in equal opportunities and demonstrate the courage to try again and again, then we can boldly say that hope is being restored,” he stated.
He added that prosperity promotes stability while hope builds resilience, stressing that both are essential for national development.
The Independence Day celebration in Cape Coast featured a parade by school children and security services, demonstrating discipline and patriotism as part of activities marking the historic day.
Ghana celebrates Independence Day every year on March 6 to mark its liberation from British colonial rule in 1957, becoming the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence.
