The Bank of Ghana has launched a year-long national initiative to commemorate 60 years of the Ghana cedi, aimed at promoting public understanding of the currency’s history and reinforcing national confidence in Ghana’s monetary independence.
The program, themed “Cedi @ 60: Our Money, Our Heritage, Our Future,” was officially launched by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, at the Accra International Conference Centre.
“This is more than a celebration of longevity,” Dr. Addison said. “It is a national engagement that will blend public education, policy dialogue, and historical reflection to reconnect citizens with the story of our currency.”
He explained that the Cedi @ 60 initiative will feature currency exhibitions, community forums, school tours, and public lectures across the country. The Bank also plans to engage the diaspora to highlight the role of remittances and international trust in supporting the currency’s strength.
“From classrooms to boardrooms, and from markets to fintech hubs, we want every Ghanaian to understand the story of the cedi not just as a medium of exchange, but as a symbol of our sovereignty and resilience,” he added.
Dr. Asiama recalled that when Ghana introduced the cedi in July 1965, it was not merely a change of banknotes but a statement of national independence and economic identity.
“Sixty years ago, we affirmed that Ghana’s independence must include the ability to define and defend our own monetary destiny,” he said.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the country’s past leaders and the early governors of the Bank of Ghana, whose dedication laid the foundation for today’s financial system.
“Their integrity and service made the cedi a trusted store of value, a driver of economic activity, and a daily emblem of our collective confidence,” he remarked.
The Cedi @ 60 celebration will run over the next twelve months and will include legacy projects designed to leave a lasting educational impact, particularly for younger generations.
