The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has defended his ongoing nationwide “thank you tour,” describing it as a gesture of accountability and respect for Ghanaian tradition.
Speaking during a stop in the Hohoe Constituency of the Volta Region, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah said the four-day tour is meant to express appreciation to party members and Ghanaians who supported his election as national chairman.
He dismissed suggestions that the move was unnecessary or unconventional, stressing that leadership should not be limited by precedent.
“When I decided to embark on this thank-you tour, there were so many interpretations,” he said. “People asked, ‘Why should I go around to thank people when no chairman has ever done it?’ But I said the fact that no chairman has embarked on a thank-you tour doesn’t mean no chairman will ever do so.”
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah emphasised that the initiative is part of his commitment to integrity and accountability in leadership, noting that “What we have been used to are politicians who promise and never deliver. During my campaign, I promised that if given the mandate, I would return to thank you, and that is exactly what I am doing.”
He added that he does not want to be remembered as an ungrateful leader who failed to honour his word.
“I don’t want to be a national chairman who will go down in history as ungrateful,” he said. “I want to continue my tradition of delivering on my promises. What I cannot deliver, I don’t promise. My word is my bond.”
According to the NDC chairman, the tour also reflects Ghanaian cultural values that emphasize gratitude and respect.
“It sits very well with our tradition that when you go and beg somebody to give you something, and you are given what you requested, the next thing is to go back and thank them,” he explained. “That is why I have come to thank everyone.”
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah is expected to continue his “thank you tour” across other parts of the Volta Region before moving to the remaining regions of the country.
