Ghana’s healthcare sector is bracing for major disruption as the Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) has announced a nationwide strike beginning Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
The Association says the industrial action comes after months of frustration over unpaid salaries, stalled postings, and what it describes as persistent unfair treatment of its members.
In a statement signed by President Dr. Louisa Afia Nkrumah and General Secretary Dr. Rhoda Wun-nam Amadu on October 2, the group revealed that more than 200 junior doctors have worked between 10 and 14 months without pay, while some medical officers who were already on payroll have seen their salaries suspended without explanation.
The JDA further disclosed that over 800 medical officers have been left without postings for 16 months, despite repeated engagements with authorities.

“Despite goodwill shown towards the government, no solutions have been offered. The continued exploitation of junior doctors will no longer be tolerated,” the Association said.
Strike Phases Outlined
- October 7–9: Outpatient services will be withdrawn nationwide.
- From October 10: Emergency services will also be suspended until further notice.
- Inpatients will continue to be treated until discharge, but no new admissions will be taken.
The Association placed full responsibility for the disruption on the Ministry of Health and the Government of Ghana, urging swift action to avert a deepening healthcare crisis.
For now, patients and hospitals across the country are preparing for what could be one of the most significant strikes in Ghana’s health sector in recent years.
