Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation and Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his renewed efforts in tackling illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
He described the current approach as a marked improvement over the previous administration.
In an exclusive interview on JoyNews, Sam George stressed that even though President Mahama has been in office for only nine months, his government has shown strong determination to deal with the menace.
“Do I wish I had seen more? Absolutely, I wish it ended today. But in these nine months, I can confidently say that I see a desire and a will to deal with galamsey that didn’t exist in the previous eight years,” he said.
The MP further pointed to collaboration between the Ministries of Lands and Natural Resources, Environment, Defence, and Interior in combating galamsey, citing an inter-ministerial operation that unfortunately resulted in the August 6th incident during an anti-mining exercise.
While applauding the progress made, he cautioned against complacency, adding “I see the work being done, I see the briefs in cabinet, but we must move faster. We cannot afford to rest on our oars,” Sam George added.
