Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has once again captured global attention — this time not with hidden cameras, but through a revolutionary fusion of journalism and gaming.

At the Floodlight Gaming Connects Investigative Reporting event held in Amsterdam on September 24, 2025, Anas’s project Hunting the Hunter was declared the winning entry in the world’s first investigative journalism game jam.

The game, developed by Bernard Lis and Chris Vogel and based on Anas’s undercover work on cocoa smuggling in Ghana’s western border towns, immerses players in the high-stakes world of investigative reporting. Participants step into the shoes of a journalist, confronting dilemmas, infiltrating smuggling rings, and piecing together corruption networks.

Floodlight’s jury praised the game as an “impressive prototype for an open-world experience that combines sharp visuals with strong storytelling.”

For Anas, the recognition is more than an accolade — it signals a new frontier for journalism.

“We fight corruption with facts, but we also need to inspire the next generation to hold truth sacred. This win shows the world is ready,” Anas said after the announcement.

The event also featured other powerful prototypes, including Dark Money (OCCRP’s Laundromat investigation), Echoes: El Salvador, Rise of Viktor Orban, and Cocoa Capture, also based on Anas’s investigations.

The initiative, organized by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), the Gabo Foundation, and Anima Interactive, was supported by V-Ventures, SpielFabrique, Global Game Jam, and the International Game Developers Association.

The victory has stirred national pride in Ghana, with civil society leaders calling it proof that Ghanaian journalism continues to innovate on a global scale.

Beyond the award, Anas’s pioneering work points to a future where young people can learn about corruption, accountability, and human rights — not just by reading reports, but by playing through them.
