A new survey by Global Info Analytics has positioned Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, as the leading contender in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer contest ahead of the 2028 general election.
According to the poll, Mr. Iddrisu commands 30% support from respondents, placing him ahead of NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who secured 24%, and Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, with 18%.
Other candidates received single-digit endorsements, including Julius Debrah (10.3%), Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (8%), Eric Opoku (2.5%), Joshua Alabi (2.2%), Armah Kofi Buah (2.0%), Kwame Awuah-Darko (1.6%), Dr. Spio Garbrah (1.1%), and Oko Vanderpuije (0.1%).
The poll also tested three-way scenarios to assess potential outcomes in the absence of certain contenders. In a race without Dr. Forson, Haruna Iddrisu’s support rises to 45%, followed by Asiedu Nketia with 37% and Julius Debrah with 18%. However, in a contest without Mr. Iddrisu, Asiedu Nketia leads with 40%, ahead of Dr. Forson (38%) and Julius Debrah (22%).
Global Info Analytics described the results as “a clear indication of the shifting dynamics within the NDC as the party begins to look beyond the 2024 elections.”
The pollsters further noted that “Haruna Iddrisu’s early lead reflects his long-standing influence in the party and the northern stronghold, but the race remains fluid, with Asiedu Nketia and Ato Forson emerging as strong challengers.”
Political watchers say the findings underscore the possibility of a highly competitive internal race that could shape the NDC’s future direction.
