President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to making primary healthcare the foundation of Ghana’s universal health coverage agenda.
In a statement delivered on his behalf by the Central Regional Minister, President Mahama described primary healthcare as “the most equitable and cost-effective pathway to meet the health needs of our people.”
He assured that government will prioritize the integration of community pharmacies into the health delivery system, noting “Community pharmacies are often the most accessible health facilities for our people, especially in urban areas. By empowering pharmacists to provide expanded services such as health screening, vaccination, and chronic disease management, we can ensure quality healthcare for every Ghanaian,” he said.
The President further reiterated his administration’s goal of positioning Ghana as a pharmaceutical manufacturing hub in West Africa, highlighting “We will continue to support indigenous pharmaceutical companies through policy, financing and infrastructure development, so that we can achieve self-reliance in the production of essential medicines and contribute to regional and continental supply chains. Ghana cannot depend indefinitely on imports for our pharmaceutical needs,” President Mahama stated.
According to him, government, through the Ghana EXIM Bank and other development partners, will dedicate financial resources to support this vision.
He concluded by saluting pharmacists across the country for their sacrifices and commitment to improving the health of Ghanaians.
