Former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong, has expressed deep concern over the moral state of students completing Senior High School (SHS).
His comments come in reaction to a viral TikTok video in which two recently graduated female students were seen making profane statements and boasting of sexual behaviour they intend to pursue after school.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM, Rev. Dr. Opuni stressed that while academic excellence is important, moral and spiritual development must also form a core part of Ghana’s educational system.
“We cannot only focus on STEM and other academic fields while neglecting the moral side. Education without moral and spiritual values will only produce intelligent criminals,” he warned.
He further cautioned that Ghana’s educational system has become overly politicized, making it difficult for teachers to correct students, particularly under the NPP and NDC government.
Rev. Dr. Opuni acknowledged the Free SHS policy as a laudable initiative but questioned its long-term impact if it produces graduates with questionable morals.
“Free SHS is a good initiative, but if it will produce less morally upright students, then it must be revised,” he added.
He pointed to schools lacking proper infrastructure, where some students are forced to sit on the floor during lessons, stressing that although the Free SHS policy is a game changer, it requires critical review.
He urged education leaders to prioritize holistic training that shapes character and instills discipline, noting that moral education is critical to nurturing responsible citizens who will contribute positively to society.
