The Government of Ghana has expressed strong opposition to the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) proposal to increase electricity tariffs by 225 percent.
President John Mahama, addressing the media, stated that his administration does not support the proposed increment, stressing that it would place an unbearable burden on citizens and businesses.
“My government disagrees with ECG’s request for a 225 percent increase in electricity tariffs. We are committed to exploring other measures to raise the necessary resources for ECG without transferring such a huge cost to consumers,” President Mahama said.
He explained that the government is working on strategies to provide financial support to ECG while also encouraging citizens to contribute responsibly to ensure the company’s sustainability.
The President further noted that significant reforms have already been implemented within ECG to enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs.
“We have introduced a number of changes in the ECG sector. It is now the responsibility of the company to work diligently to cut costs and reduce debt, rather than overburdening Ghanaians with exorbitant tariffs,” he added.
The government has assured that it will continue engaging with stakeholders to find a balanced solution that ensures reliable power supply while protecting consumers from steep tariff hikes.
