General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has dismissed suggestions that the party’s defeat in the Akwatia by-election will have any negative implications for the 2028 general elections.
The NPP lost the September 2 contest to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), but speaking on Adom FM, Mr. Kodua maintained that the results were expected given the constituency’s history as a swing seat with very slim winning margins.
“Anyone who has followed Ghanaian politics for a while could tell that the election was going to be a difficult one for the NPP because Akwatia is known to be a swing constituency. We knew we had to work extra hard going into the election, especially since the NDC had won just eight months ago,” he said.
According to him, the NDC’s campaign strategy also played a major role in their victory. He argued that the opposition’s message, which promised accelerated development if voters backed their candidate, swayed undecided constituents.
“The NDC sold a message that suggested voting for them would guarantee developmental projects. They even rushed to begin road construction works in Akwatia days before the election just to influence voter choices. But we are watching closely to see if their promises will be fulfilled,” the NPP General Secretary added.
Despite the loss, Mr. Kodua expressed satisfaction with his party’s performance, stressing that the outcome will not affect the NPP’s chances in 2028.
“In fact, the NPP remains strong in Akwatia, and I can boldly say this result will not reflect in the 2028 general elections,” he reaffirmed.
The by-election was held following the vacancy created as a result of the demise of it’s MP, Ernest Kumi, and it drew keen interest as both major parties considered it a test of their grassroots strength.
