The Acting Commissioner of the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB Ghana), John M. K. Wumborti, has assured Ghanaians that the country’s airspace remains safe, despite concerns over the recent Z-9 helicopter crash and emergency landings by other aircraft.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on August 26, 2025, Mr. Wumborti clarified the bureau’s mandate, stressing that AIB Ghana is an autonomous body and not under the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority.
“When a statement was issued yesterday, we were described as part of Ghana Civil Aviation. We are in the aviation industry, but we are an independent and autonomous organization. We are not part of Ghana Civil Aviation because our role is to investigate what they do,” he explained.
He further noted that the bureau does not investigate military aircraft incidents unless specifically mandated by the Ministry of Defence.
Commenting on speculation surrounding the Z-9 helicopter crash, Mr. Wumborti dismissed unverified claims such as bird strikes, insisting that investigations are strictly evidence-based.
“We are professionals; we don’t speculate. When there is an occurrence, we go to the field, collect factual information, and verify the data. Only after this process can we determine what actually happened,” he said.
The Acting Commissioner assured the public that the bureau’s findings, once completed, will be used to strengthen aviation safety and prevent future incidents.
