Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has emphasized the need for the party to return to its core values of integrity, selflessness, and service.
In an interview on Asempa FM, Mr. Agyepong, who has announced his intention to contest the NPP’s 2026 presidential primaries, expressed his desire to embody the principles that originally defined the party.
Reflecting on his early political involvement, Mr. Agyepong recounted how he risked his professional engineering career to publicly support the NPP during the early years of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
“I was young, and it wasn’t easy. But I took the bold step to campaign for Prof. Adu Boahen. I didn’t do it for money or recognition, but for the love of Ghana and the party,” he noted.
He called on the NPP to recommit to its traditions of sacrifice and public service, cautioning that public confidence in politics is diminishing.
Recalling the dangers of openly associating with the party in 1992, when it was symbolized by the elephant, he said, “At the time, it was dangerous to be identified with the elephant. There was only one state broadcaster, and when you spoke there, everyone was listening. It wasn’t easy, but we took the risk to defend the party’s vision.”
Mr. Agyepong stressed the importance of restoring moral integrity in the political arena, warning “We need to restore the moral compass of our politics. If we don’t go back to the core values that brought us this far, the people’s trust in politics will continue to erode.”
He also addressed the growing influence of money on Ghanaian society stating, “We’ve let money rule us as a people. Many are living beyond their means, and that’s a serious concern for us as a country.”
Drawing from personal experiences, he shared how his own struggles have deepened his empathy for ordinary citizens and strengthened his resolve to promote a new kind of politics.
