The University of Cape Coast has sworn in a new batch of executives for the; Students’ Representative Council (SRC), local National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG).

The newly sworn-in executives will lead students’ affairs for the 2025/2026 academic year. They were sworn in at a symbolic and joyous ceremony held at the Academic Board Chamber of the Central Administration complex.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor at the swearing-in ceremony, the Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto congratulated the outgoing executives for their dedication and collaboration with management, describing their efforts as impactful in promoting student welfare.

He urged the incoming student leaders to remember that they are not just representatives but role models whose “actions and decisions, including inactions will impact the student body.”

He urged them to approach their roles with passion and commitment.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor outlined key principles for effective leadership, including listening and advocating for students, fostering inclusivity, building team collaboration, and demonstrating resilience in the face of challenges.

On behalf of the outgoing GRASAG executives, President Robert Ipiin Gnankob advised the incoming leaders, stressing on responsiveness to the demands of students.

“Postgraduate students will call you at any time. If you don’t return the call, they will call you a bad leader,” he said.

He also highlighted several legacy projects attained by his administration:

  • Establishment of an infirmary at Valco Trust Hall,
  • An emergency accommodation scheme for visiting postgraduate students.
  • A new postgraduate research Centre at the School of Graduate Studies.
  • Advocacy for a separate academic calendar and online thesis submission.
  • Participation in high-level national and international academic forums.

Delivering his acceptance speech after he was sworn in, the new president of GRASAG, Mr. Gideon Quansah, expressed gratitude for the historic support he received – winning the election with over 90% of the votes cast – the highest in GRASAG-UCC history.

He pledged to pursue urgent solutions to pressing student concerns, notably among them are; the delay in securing ethical clearance for thesis work, inadequate lecture theatres, insufficient accommodation for post-graduate students.

“In our administration, there will be no room for spectators. This is going to be a shared journey, and we invite every one of you to rise from the stands and join the field of action. We believe that all dreams of individual members are achievable here if we work collaboratively towards them.”, he assured.

Outgoing SRC President, Mr. Abraham Norman Nortey, delivered a passionate farewell, describing his tenure as one driven by faith, transparency, and service.

“There was no secrecy—just service… Each amount disbursed was traceable and justifiable,” he declared.

Among his notable achievements were:

  • The construction of the Norman Bridge connecting the Amamoma community to the Sandwich Lecture Theatre (SWLT)
  • The Bus Stop between the Amissah-Arthur Language Centre and the Sandwich Lecture Theatre
  • Payment of student fees and establishment of a food bank as a means of support for vulnerable students.

He urged the incoming president to lead with “humility, courage, and wisdom,” reminding all that true leadership is “not about proving others wrong, but proving your future right.”

On his part, the newly sworn-in SRC President, Mr. Kwame Ntim Ntiamoah emphasized his administration’s commitment to building a “responsive, accountable, and forward-thinking” student council.

“Therefore, as a family, the Ntim fraternity, our vision has always been to build a responsive, accountable, and forward-thinking SRC that champions student welfare, promotes academic excellence, and create opportunities for every student to try.”

He outlined four key policy areas for his administration, namely; student welfare, including on-campus convenience stores, health initiatives; academic innovation with a focus on boosting campus internet connectivity; inclusion and accessibility, such as libraries for students with special needs; and career development, with the aim of launching a UCC Job Fair.

He pledged to collaborate with the University management to see the realization of the plans.

“We are not going to do this in isolation, but we are ready to work in tandem with management to see that this comes into fruition.”
