The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has officially appointed Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Manso Opuni as its Acting Chief Executive Officer, with his tenure commencing today, Monday, July 14, 2025.

A post on the Authority’s Facebook page confirmed that Professor Opuni, who until now served as Board Chairman of the FDA, succeeds Dr. Delese Darko, who has been appointed Director-General of the Africa Medicines Agency (AMA).

The FDA expressed gratitude to Dr. Darko for her remarkable leadership and commitment over the years, highlighting her contributions to enhancing Ghana’s regulatory systems, safeguarding public health, and strengthening global collaborations.

The Authority described her new role at the AMA as a recognition of her outstanding service and influence in the sector.

Welcoming Professor Opuni into his new position, the FDA expressed optimism that he will strengthen the Authority’s efforts to uphold high standards in the regulation of products for public safety, quality, and efficacy.

Professor Opuni is a trained pharmacist and holds a Master’s Degree in Pharmaceutical Analysis and Quality Control from KNUST, earned in 2005.

He has been licensed as a pharmacist since 2003 and certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP) since 2008.

He completed his PhD in 2016 at the University of Rostock in Germany and returned there in 2019 for postdoctoral studies.

A former DAAD Scholar, he was also awarded the Hermes Grant for research at the University of Washington, USA.

His career with the FDA began in 2006, after which he transitioned to academia in 2010.

He is currently an Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Ghana’s School of Pharmacy.

In addition to his academic work, Professor Opuni serves on various GTEC panels reviewing pharmacy education programmes and acts as an external examiner and assessor for other tertiary institutions.

He has published widely in academic journals, contributed to book chapters, and co-authored a textbook on pharmacoproteomic.

The FDA is confident that his experience and expertise will further the Authority’s mandate of protecting public health and advancing regulatory excellence.
