Meta has officially acquired Play AI, a startup specializing in AI-generated human-like voices.
A spokesperson for Meta confirmed the acquisition to Bloomberg, which reported that an internal memo indicated the entire Play AI team will join the company next week. TechCrunch has also reached out to Meta for further confirmation.
According to the memo, Play AI’s expertise in creating natural voices and an intuitive voice creation platform aligns well with Meta’s goals in AI characters, Meta AI, wearables, and audio content creation.

Meta has been heavily investing in AI, including aggressive recruitment from OpenAI and a partnership with Scale AI, which brought CEO Alexandr Wang to Meta to lead a new group focused on superintelligence.
The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed, although Bloomberg previously reported that acquisition discussions were underway between the two companies.
