Gmail introduces ‘Manage Subscriptions’ tool to declutter inboxes

Google announced on Tuesday the launch of a new feature in Gmail aimed at helping users manage their subscriptions and declutter their inboxes. The “Manage subscriptions” tool is being rolled out on the web, as well as on Android and iOS in select countries.

This feature allows users to view and manage their subscription emails in one convenient location, making it easy to unsubscribe from unwanted messages. Users can see their active subscriptions, organized by the most frequent senders, along with the number of emails received in recent weeks. Clicking on a sender provides access to all emails from that source. If a user chooses to unsubscribe, Gmail will automatically send the request to the sender.

Chris Doan, Gmail’s director of product, noted in a blog post, “It can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of subscription emails clogging your inbox. Daily deal alerts that are essentially spam, weekly newsletters from blogs you no longer read, and promotional emails from retailers you haven’t shopped with in years can quickly accumulate.”

To access the new feature, users can click the navigation bar in the top-left corner of their Gmail inbox and select “Manage subscriptions.”

The introduction of this feature is not unexpected; some users had spotted it in April. “Manage subscriptions” joins other Gmail tools designed to streamline inbox management, including a one-click unsubscribe option that was launched last year, allowing users to quickly unsubscribe without navigating websites or email footers.

Google stated that the feature will start rolling out on the web immediately, with Android users receiving it on July 14 and iOS users on July 21. It may take up to 15 days for the feature to reach all users.

The “Manage subscriptions” tool is available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.
