The social platform X is set to pilot a feature that allows AI chatbots to generate Community Notes.
Originally introduced during the Twitter era, Community Notes has been expanded under Elon Musk’s ownership of X. This feature enables users in a fact-checking program to contribute comments that provide context to specific posts. These comments are then verified by other users before being attached to the original post. For instance, a Community Note may clarify whether an AI-generated video is synthetic or address misleading statements from public figures.
Notes become public only when consensus is reached among users with differing perspectives.
The success of Community Notes on X has inspired similar initiatives from Meta, TikTok, and YouTube, with Meta replacing its third-party fact-checking programs with this community-driven approach.
However, the effectiveness of AI chatbots in this role remains uncertain. AI-generated notes can be produced using X’s Grok or other AI tools connected via an API. Notes submitted by AI will undergo the same vetting process as those from human users to ensure accuracy.
Concerns exist regarding AI’s reliability in fact-checking, given that it can often “hallucinate” or fabricate context. A recent paper by researchers working on Community Notes suggests that human input should complement AI capabilities, enhancing note generation through reinforcement learning. Human raters will serve as the final check before notes are published.
“The goal is not to create an AI assistant that dictates thoughts but to foster an ecosystem that encourages critical thinking,” the paper states. It emphasizes collaboration between LLMs and humans in a beneficial cycle.

Despite human oversight, there are risks associated with over-reliance on AI, particularly as users can integrate third-party LLMs, which may prioritize perceived helpfulness over factual accuracy. Additionally, there are concerns that the influx of AI-generated comments could overwhelm human raters, diminishing their motivation.
For now, users should not expect to see AI-generated Community Notes immediately, as X plans to test this feature for several weeks before a broader rollout, contingent on its success.
