Meta announced on Wednesday that it is adding an AI-powered summaries feature to WhatsApp. This optional feature uses Meta AI to summarize unread messages in a chat.
According to the company, the summary will be visible only to you, not to others in the chat.
This feature builds on the AI technology released by Meta in April, allowing the implementation of AI capabilities without compromising encryption or user privacy.
“Message Summaries use Private Processing technology, enabling Meta AI to generate responses without Meta or WhatsApp accessing your messages or the private summaries. No one else in the chat can see your summarized unread messages,” the company stated in a blog post.
While the feature is off by default, WhatsApp displays an icon indicating its availability.

Meta is initially rolling out the feature in the U.S. with support for the English language, with plans to expand to more countries and languages later this year.
Previously, users could access Meta AI in the chat for general inquiries or to tag messages for context, but it could not read messages.
The new technology allows WhatsApp to privately access context from your chat to process requests through its AI, enabling it to summarize messages or offer writing suggestions.
These AI-powered features can be accessed via a new setting under Settings > Chats > Private Processing, allowing users to enable or disable individual functions.
