If you’ve recently upgraded to a new iPhone, you may have noticed Apple Intelligence integrated into popular apps like Messages, Mail, and Notes. Launched in October 2024, Apple Intelligence (AI) aims to compete with Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic in providing advanced AI tools.
What is Apple Intelligence?
Apple markets Apple Intelligence as “AI for the rest of us.” It enhances existing features through generative AI, enabling functionalities like text and image generation. Similar to platforms like ChatGPT and Google Gemini, Apple Intelligence is trained on extensive information models using deep learning.
The text features, powered by large language models (LLMs), include Writing Tools available across various Apple apps, allowing for text summarization, proofreading, and drafting messages based on user prompts.
Image generation is also included, enabling users to create custom emojis (Genmojis) and utilize the Image Playground app for generating visual content.
Additionally, Apple Intelligence revamps Siri, which now offers deeper integration across Apple’s systems. Users will see a glowing light around their iPhone when Siri is active, enhancing the user experience. Siri can now execute tasks across apps, such as editing photos for direct insertion into messages.
While many anticipated a more advanced version of Siri at WWDC 2025, Apple SVP Craig Federighi indicated that improvements are still in development, with plans for Siri to understand personal context. However, a Bloomberg report noted that the current version is too error-prone for release.
At WWDC 2025, Apple introduced Visual Intelligence for image searches and Live Translation for real-time conversation translations in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone apps, with both features expected to launch alongside iOS 26 in late 2025.

When Was Apple Intelligence Unveiled?
Apple Intelligence was announced at WWDC 2024 amid growing generative AI interest. Rather than being a standalone feature, it integrates into existing applications, providing new functionalities powered by LLMs.
The initial wave of Apple Intelligence features arrived with updates to iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. A second wave, including Genmoji and Image Playground, was introduced with iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2.
These features are available for free on compatible devices, including all iPhone 16 models and select iPhone 15 models, as well as various iPad and Mac models.
