Microsoft has officially introduced its highly-anticipated handheld console, years after initial rumors circulated.
The ROG Xbox Ally will allow gamers to access their Game Pass subscription library on the go, providing members with hundreds of games right from the start. This console is developed in partnership with Asus, which has been creating handheld gaming devices since 2023, and is set for release at the end of 2025, although pricing details remain unknown.
Speculation about a handheld Xbox has persisted for over a decade, with Microsoft launching and then abandoning several attempts along the way. The announcement comes just three days after the launch of the Switch 2, a hybrid gaming device that can be played on-the-go or connected to a TV.
The success of the Switch 2 likely influenced the design of Valve’s Steam Deck, a handheld PC that provides access to games purchased through the Steam distribution service, although compatibility varies. Microsoft may face criticism for entering the market later than competitors, but the native support for Game Pass could alleviate concerns for its 34 million subscribers.

Two Versions
Microsoft’s handheld will be available in two models: the ROG Xbox Ally and the ROG Xbox Ally X.
“Whether you’re at home or on the go, your favorite games should follow you,” said Roanne Sones, Xbox head of gaming devices. “Both handhelds allow players to play natively, via the cloud, or remotely with their Xbox console in another room.”
Both versions feature a 7-inch screen with 1080p resolution. The base model includes 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage, while the “X” version boasts 24GB of memory and double the storage. The more powerful model also includes a larger battery and enhanced processor.
Both handhelds run Windows, offering access to games not available elsewhere, enabling users to launch other gaming platforms like Steam and EA Play.
However, this capability comes with added weight—670g for the base model and 715g for the X version—making them heavier than typical handhelds, especially compared to the 534g Switch 2. Pricing remains a mystery, although the more powerful X version is expected to be pricier.
Game Announcements
At the showcase event, Microsoft revealed several new games, including 17 titles that will debut on Game Pass PC & Ultimate on launch day. Notable releases include Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4, Ninja Gaiden 4, and Outer Worlds 2, along with the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.
Interestingly, despite its earlier commitment to a 10-year deal with Nintendo, there was no mention of the Switch 2 during the event. Additionally, the highly-anticipated Persona 4 remake, subtitled Revival, was announced 17 years after its original release on the PlayStation 2.
