A film depicting the tumultuous period at OpenAI, when co-founder and CEO Sam Altman was fired and rehired within five days, is reportedly in development.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie, titled “Artificial,” is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
While details are still being finalized, sources indicate that Luca Guadagnino, known for “Call Me by Your Name” and “Challengers,” is in talks to direct. The studio is considering Andrew Garfield for the role of Altman, Monica Barbaro (“A Complete Unknown”) as former CTO Mira Murati, and Yura Borisov (“Anora”) to play Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder who advocated for Altman’s removal.
Additionally, “Saturday Night Live” writer Simon Rich is reportedly writing the screenplay, hinting at comedic elements. Given the absurdity of the AI landscape and the events of two years ago, a comedic take seems fitting.

In November 2023, Altman was dismissed from OpenAI and resigned from both his CEO position and the board, with the board citing a lack of trust in his leadership. However, just five days later, after extensive discussions, an agreement was reached, leading to Altman’s reinstatement.
Regardless of the casting choices, it will be intriguing to see how “Artificial” portrays this drama and how audiences respond, especially as AI tools like ChatGPT become increasingly prevalent.
