Telegram has announced a partnership with Elon Musk’s xAI to incorporate AI tools into its messaging service.
In a statement, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov revealed that the collaboration will introduce the AI assistant, Grok, to Telegram’s over a billion users and integrate it into the app. The deal, expected to last for one year, will provide Telegram with $300 million in cash and equity from xAI, along with 50% of revenue from xAI subscriptions sold through the platform.

This partnership follows Meta’s recent integration of an AI service into WhatsApp, a move that faced user backlash. Media analyst Hanna Kahlert from Midia Research noted that this trend reflects an ongoing merger of social and AI technologies, but questioned whether this aligns with user preferences. She emphasized that people primarily use social platforms to connect with friends, and introducing AI into direct messaging may diminish trust and distract from the core experience.
The collaboration brings together two prominent figures in tech, both known for their controversial reputations. Durov was arrested in France in August 2024 for allegedly failing to moderate his app effectively, leading critics to label Telegram as the “dark web in your pocket.” He has denied accusations of non-cooperation with law enforcement regarding issues like drug trafficking and child exploitation.
Musk, known for his diverse tech interests, from Neuralink to SpaceX, has also heavily invested in AI. He co-founded OpenAI but later left amid disputes over its direction. Musk is now positioning xAI as a competitor to OpenAI and other industry leaders. In March, he announced the acquisition of X, formerly Twitter, valuing xAI at $80 billion.
