President John Dramani Mahama has expressed grave concern over the increasing levels of indiscipline in Senior High Schools (SHSs) across Ghana, describing it as a troubling reflection of a broader moral and societal decline.
Speaking during a meeting with members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference at the Jubilee House on Friday, May 23, 2025, President Mahama stressed the need for urgent and collective efforts to restore discipline and moral values in the education system.
“We are seeing the breakdown of our values and morals, and it is creating serious issues in our schools,” he noted. “You find young people going to school with guns. There have been incidents involving weapons, and in one case, a girl nearly lost her eyesight. These are alarming developments.”
The President’s concerns stem from recent warnings by the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), which has threatened to take protective action if the trend is not addressed by the end of the month.
President Mahama underscored the importance of integrating moral education and improving school oversight, while pointing out challenges such as teacher absenteeism and ineffective supervision.
“The Ghana Education Service cannot be everywhere to monitor whether teachers are present and actually teaching,” he said. “We must therefore explore stronger collaboration with the churches and religious bodies to help ensure that educators are fulfilling their responsibilities.”
He also called for a national conversation on the role of curriculum reform in instilling discipline and values in the youth.
“Beyond discipline, we must also ask ourselves—what do we do about the curriculum? What about moral education? How do we prepare these students not just academically but as responsible citizens?”
As Ghana continues to grapple with these worrying trends, President Mahama’s remarks serve as a call to action for education authorities, faith-based organizations, parents, and communities to work together in safeguarding the future of the nation’s youth.
