AMD has unveiled its latest Zen 5-based Ryzen Threadripper 9000 Series CPUs at Computex, asserting that its top Threadripper Pro chip outperforms Intel’s Xeon CPUs. The flagship Threadripper Pro 9995WX features an impressive 96 cores and 192 threads, designed specifically for demanding workstation tasks such as visual effects, simulations, and AI model development.

This powerful chip also boasts up to 384MB of L3 cache and 128 lanes of PCIe Gen 5, making it ideal for setups with multiple GPUs. According to AMD, the Threadripper Pro 9995WX is 2.2 times faster than Intel’s 60-core Xeon W9-3595X processor in Cinebench 2024 multi-threaded rendering.
For those who don’t require a 96-core CPU, the Threadripper 9000 Series also caters to enthusiasts and creators seeking workstation-level performance. The Ryzen Threadripper 9980X offers 64 cores, 128 threads, a base frequency of 3.2GHz, and 320MB of L3 cache.
All new Threadripper chips, whether pro or standard, will have a thermal design power (TDP) of 350 watts and will be compatible with existing motherboards that support the sTR5 socket after a BIOS update.
Both the Threadripper 9000 Series and the Pro WX-Series processors will be available from retailers in July, though AMD has yet to announce pricing. Given that the high-end 7980X Threadripper CPU retailed for $4,999 in 2023, it’s likely these next-generation models will be priced similarly.
