Valco Hall of the University of Cape Coast was a hub of celebration from May 9 to 11 as the Valco Hall Alumni Association held its much-anticipated 2025 Homecoming.
The three-day reunion, themed “Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future,” brought together close to 100 former students to reconnect, mentor current students, and chart a course for the hall’s continued growth.
A major highlight of the celebration was a grand durbar on Saturday, which featured former Deputy Minister of Education, Gifty Twum-Ampofo, as the guest speaker.
Other dignitaries included the Director General of the Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA), Professor Michael Boakye-Yiadom.
In his keynote address, Prof. Boakye-Yiadom emphasized the vital role of alumni associations in institutional development, noting, “We are all aware of the importance of alumni associations in the development of institutions. In higher education, alumni contributions to the advancement of universities both in Ghana and globally are very important,” he said.
He further noted that, “The most important thing is the mentorship that Valco Hall alumni are giving to students. We are supporting them, encouraging them, and advising them on career choices. If every hall has a strong alumni association, the UCC alumni network will be stronger and more impactful.”
President of the Valco Hall Alumni Association, Ms. Shirley Haizel-Ferguson, expressed her excitement over the turnout and engagement, emphasizing that “Always come back to UCC, coming back to Valco Hall is something we look forward to. This is the fifth time we’ve held the homecoming, and this year’s celebration has been beautiful,” she said.
“We realized that there’s so much we took from Valco Hall that has guided us. The support we give the hall today will determine its future. So it’s only fair that we come back to impart knowledge to our young industrialists.”
She called for more collaboration among alumni and encouraged them to stay connected through platforms like WhatsApp and in-person meetups, adding, “By this, we hope to encourage students to join the alumni and be active so we can collectively grow Valco Hall, the alumni association, and UCC as a whole.”
Hall Master, Professor Opoku Boadu, praised the event’s success and reiterated the importance of building a sustained alumni culture, highlighting, “Today’s program has been an improvement on what we did last year. If we’re able to sustain this, Valco Hall has a future, and the University of Cape Coast also has a future,” he noted.
The 2025 Homecoming not only rekindled cherished memories but also reinforced the strong bonds between past and present Valco Hall residents.
Through mentorship, networking, and reflection, the event exemplified the enduring legacy and unity of the Valco Hall community.
