The Central Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned what it describes as an excessive and politically unsettling attempt by operatives of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to arrest the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, at his residence in Accra on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
The NIB’s move followed Rev. Ntim Fordjour’s public allegations regarding two suspicious flights that landed at Kotoka International Airport.
At a press conference on April 1, 2025, the MP for Assin South alleged that two aircraft, an air ambulance and a private jet, might have been involved in drug trafficking or money laundering.
According to him, one of the aircraft, Air MED flight L823 AM, landed in Ghana on March 20 and remained for five days without any record of transporting a patient.
These allegations prompted President John Dramani Mahama to order security agencies to collaborate with the MP to investigate the allegations.
The attempted arrest was foiled when NPP MPs and Party executives rushed to Rev. John Ntim Fordjour’s home, forming a human shield to protect him.
The party expressed outrage at the incident, calling it a clear abuse of state power and a dangerous precedent in the current political climate.
At a media encounter on Thursday, April 10, addressed by the Central Regional NPP Secretary, Richard Takyi-Mensah, the party stated that the attempt to apprehend Rev. Ntim Fordjour without prior invitation or transparent legal procedure undermines the rule of law and threatens the democratic values the party upholds.
Describing the move as “unwarranted, excessive, and politically insensitive,” the regional party leadership questioned the motive behind the attempted arrest and called on government authorities to immediately clarify the circumstances surrounding the operation.
Mr. Takyi-Mensah noted that Rev. Fordjour has served the nation with distinction and dignity and deserves to be treated with the respect accorded to his office.
Meanwhile, the Central Regional Branch of the NPP has commended the Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, for his swift and tactful handling of the situation.
They vowed to stand with him until the matter is thoroughly investigated and resolved through appropriate legal and constitutional means.
