Aggrey and Associates Limited has inaugurated a new foundation aimed at promoting sustainable mining practices and environmental restoration, with its maiden project set to begin in Konongo in the Ashanti Region.
The foundation, led by Director Kofi Twum Ampofo Aggrey, will kickstart its activities with a reforestation initiative involving the planting of 250 mahogany seedlings.
The effort forms part of a broader strategy to rehabilitate lands degraded by mining activities and to restore ecological balance in affected areas.
“We are going to launch our environmental restoration project on Saturday, where we will begin planting 250 mahogany seedlings,” Mr. Aggrey announced.
“We have also partnered with Growth for Oil, who will supply castor oil seedlings to be planted alongside the mahogany.”
In addition to the tree-planting initiative, the foundation will conduct a comprehensive social impact and environmental assessment to better understand community needs and tailor interventions accordingly.
The assessment will include baseline studies, stakeholder consultations, and a market area report focusing on the local value and expectations from mining activities.
Director of PW Mining International, Sam Priddy also lent his support to the project, stressing the importance of community involvement in tackling illegal mining and supporting government efforts to protect the environment.
“Government policies are in place, but the communities themselves must do more. It starts with local leadership, youth education, and even parents guiding their children,” Mr. Priddy noted.
In a related development, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Emmanuel Kwamena Anyima, revealed that President John Dramani Mahama is set to commission the first cohort of 400 youth under the Blue Water Initiative on Monday, April 14, 2025.
These recruits, known as Water River Guards, will help protect Ghana’s water bodies from illegal mining and other environmental threats.
“There is no cooperation without common interest,” Anyima stated, underscoring the importance of collective responsibility in environmental protection.
