Ghanaians will soon say goodbye to the long lines and frustrations that plagued the previous SIM card re-registration exercise, as the government rolls out a fully digital registration process starting June 2025.
The move, announced by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mr Samuel Nartey George, is a direct response to public outcry over logistical hurdles faced during the earlier phases of the nationwide registration campaign.
Speaking during a visit to Margins ID Group—the company behind the Intelligent Card Production Systems (ICPS)—Sam George emphasized that the new process would be entirely online, removing the need for physical presence at registration centres.
“This new system will put an end to the long queues and delays we experienced in the past,”
Sam George shared in a Facebook post on Tuesday, April 8.
“Subscribers will no longer have to physically visit any centre. The system will automatically verify their identity using data from national records.”
The updated registration method uses automation to cross-check subscriber details with the national database, eliminating manual verifications and the bottlenecks that previously slowed down the process.
This development follows lessons learned from the initial SIM registration campaign, which launched in 2021 and required all subscribers to link their SIM cards to their Ghana Cards. The exercise was met with significant challenges, including limited access to Ghana Cards and long wait times, particularly in underserved areas.

Sam George acknowledged these setbacks and noted that the new digital model was developed with citizen convenience in mind.
“We have listened to the feedback and designed a system that works for everyone—simple, efficient, and contact-free,” he said.
As the June launch approaches, the Ministry plans to roll out a comprehensive public education campaign to ensure citizens understand the process and are prepared to register from the comfort of their homes or mobile devices.
The Minister encouraged all Ghanaians to ensure their Ghana Cards are valid and accessible ahead of the exercise.
“The digital shift is not just about convenience,” he added. “It’s about building a smarter, more inclusive digital Ghana.”
