Thousands of Ghanaians who have waited nearly two years for their Ghana Cards can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the National Identification Authority (NIA) begins clearing a major backlog.
In a public statement issued on Monday, April 7, 2025, the NIA confirmed that individuals who applied for the Ghana Card—whether for first-time issuance, replacement, or record updates—between June 2023 and now can begin collecting their cards at the respective district offices within the Greater Accra Region.
The NIA explained that this long-overdue card distribution marks a renewed commitment to ensure that all eligible Ghanaians are officially registered and equipped with the Ghana Card, now regarded as the country’s primary means of identification.
“The issuance of the Ghana Cards will begin at the District Offices where applicants originally registered,” said Williams Darlas, Acting Head of Corporate Affairs at the NIA. He encouraged applicants who have been waiting since June 2023 to visit their district offices starting Monday, April 7.

The Authority is also calling on Ghanaians aged 15 and above who have yet to register for the Ghana Card to take advantage of the ongoing process and visit any NIA District Office in the region for free first-time registration.
However, Darlas cautioned that while initial card issuance remains free, services such as replacements and record updates still attract the standard administrative fees.
To uphold transparency, the NIA urged the public to report any staff demanding unofficial payments for these services.
This exercise comes at a critical time, as the Ghana Card is now essential for a range of national services—from SIM card registration to passport applications and voter registration.
