Meta to Test Community Notes with X-Style Rating System Starting March 18
Meta will begin testing its Community Notes feature, inspired by X’s open-source rating algorithm, on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads in the US. Initially, the notes won’t be publicly available as the company evaluates the writing and rating system.
In January, Meta announced the shift from its fact-checking program to Community Notes, claiming it would be “less prone to bias.” Approximately 200,000 users are on the waitlist, but access will be granted gradually.
The new system allows contributors to write and rate notes, which will only be published if a diverse range of viewpoints aligns. Community Notes will be capped at 500 characters and must include a supporting link. Initially, the notes will be anonymous to focus on the content’s helpfulness rather than the author’s identity.

To participate, users must be over 18, have a six-month-old account in good standing, and verify their phone number. At launch, contributors can’t write notes on ads but can comment on various other content types. Community Notes will support multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and French.
While Community Notes will replace the fact-checking system in the US, Meta will continue to use third-party fact-checkers internationally, with plans for global expansion in the future.
