ProceedGemini Code Assist, Google’s AI code completion and help tool, was released on Tuesday as Gemini Code Assist for Individuals, a new, free consumer version. Additionally, the business launched Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, a code review “agent” that looks for errors in code automatically and provides recommendations right within GitHub.
With Code Assist for Individuals, developers may communicate with a Google AI model that can access and modify their codebase in normal language through a chat window. Gemini Code Assist for Individuals can resolve defects, finish code segments, or provide explanations for illogical codebase sections, much to GitHub’s well-known Copilot tool.With extremely stringent usage limits, Google introduces a free AI coding help.
A version of Google’s Gemini 2.0 AI model, which has been optimized for coding applications, is used by the company’s AI coding helper. Gemini Code Assist for Individuals is compatible with numerous widely used programming languages and may be integrated through plugins with well-known coding environments like Visual Studio Code and JetBrains.
Interestingly, Code Assist for Individuals provides 180,000 code completions per month, which is 90 times the monthly usage limit of the GitHub Copilot plan, which is free and only allows 2,000 code completions. Additionally, Code Assist for Individuals allows for 240 chat requests each day, which is nearly five times as many as the free GitHub Copilot plan allows.
Google claims that the 128,000-token context window of the model underlying Code Assist for Individuals is more than four times greater than what the competitors provides. This enables the model to reason across more complex codebases by allowing it to process more code in a single query.
Starting Tuesday, developers can register for Gemini Code Assist for Individuals’ free public preview.

The two products are released as Google steps up its efforts to compete in the developer tools market against Microsoft and its subsidiary, GitHub. Ryan Salva, the former head of the GitHub Copilot team, was brought on board seven months ago by Google to lead the company’s developer tools efforts.
Salva told TechCrunch in an interview that Google wants to encourage developers early in their careers to use Code Assist by providing a free AI coding assistant with extremely high use limitations. At least some of those engineers will eventually switch to an enterprise Code Assist subscription, which is where Google will generate revenue, according to Salva.
Google has been selling Gemini Code Assist to businesses for about a year. The company announced in December that the AI coding assistant would soon integrate with third-party tools from GitLab, GitHub and Google Docs. Enterprise Code Assist tiers add features like audit logs, integration with other Google Cloud products, and customization for private repositories.
