The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Ambulance Service, Professor Ahmed Nuhu Zakaria, has urged state agencies to prioritize professionalism over partisanship in the delivery of public services.
Speaking at a recent event, he cautioned against the infiltration of political influences into emergency medical services (EMS), warning that excessive politicization could undermine the service’s ability to save lives.
Professor Zakaria emphasized that state institutions must place national interest above political affiliations to ensure continuity and efficiency in public service delivery.
“Your objective should be to serve your country, your God, and the state,” he stated.
He advised public sector workers, particularly those in EMS, to focus on securing resources for their organizations rather than engaging in internal political rivalries.
The Ghana National Ambulance Service plays a crucial role in providing pre-hospital emergency care, responding to life-threatening situations, and stabilizing patients before they reach healthcare facilities.
Given the critical nature of the service, Professor Zakaria highlighted the importance of maintaining neutrality and professionalism, regardless of which political party is in power.
He noted that employees with political ties should use their influence to lobby for additional resources rather than engaging in destructive partisan conflicts.
“If you and I belong to different parties, and your party comes into power, you should be able to lobby for resources for the service. When the government changes, I should do the same. That way, the service benefits at all times,” he explained.
Professor Zakaria further emphasized that successive governments have generally respected the autonomy of the National Ambulance Service, allowing for its steady development.
He credited this continuity with the agency’s expansion from operating in only three regions to achieving nationwide coverage.
“Every government has supported the EMS system. We started small, but through commitment and professionalism, the service has grown significantly,” he noted.
Professor Zakaria’s remarks come at a time when there is increasing concern about how political interference affects the performance of key government agencies.
Despite these challenges, the National Ambulance Service has maintained its focus on improving emergency response and saving lives.
Professor Zakaria reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the service remains non-partisan and continues to grow.
He encouraged employees to be selfless and dedicated to their duties, stating, “If we can help the country build its EMS, our health system will improve. Politics should have no place in emergency medical services.”
As Ghana continues to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure, calls for professionalism and impartiality in public service delivery remain crucial.
Professor Zakaria’s appeal underscores the need for a collective commitment to national progress, where competence and dedication take precedence over political affiliations.
