Actions speak louder than words, as the saying goes.
Valentine’s Day, the pinnacle of passion and extravagant displays, frequently makes people question their current relationship status. Paying attention to the subtle (or not-so-subtle) clues is crucial if you’re dating someone but aren’t sure if you’re the primary attraction or just a backup act. His actions on February 14th can occasionally provide hints.

You could very well be the side chick if your partner engages in any of these five behaviors.

  • He Only Texts, But Never Calls

It’s possible that you’re not the main person on your partner’s radar if he only uses text messages and avoids voice communication. Valentine’s Day is supposed to be a little more personal, like a heartfelt phone call, video chat, or private dinner. If all you’re receiving are hurried texts that seem like they were sent on the fly, you may want to start thinking about the nature of your relationship.

Unfortunately, side chicks frequently receive the “snap-and-go” treatment. While the primary partner receives the in-person attention, it is far too convenient for him to send a brief text between other obligations. It’s not the best indication if you’re receiving “Happy Valentine’s” in the midst of the day or if your texts arrive in the middle of the night, leaving no opportunity for a more meaningful conversation.

  • He’s MIA All Day, But Shows Up Late with No Real Plans

Since Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, it is expected that your significant other will try to attend, particularly if you hold special meaning for them. Something is wrong if he is “busy” all day and doesn’t even send a considerate message till the evening. A sincere spouse will make time for you, even if it’s only to let you know that you are important.

You might be the side chick if he only gets in touch with you late in the day, after all of his other plans have probably been completed. After all the major love activities are finished, a side chick usually receives the remnants of his affection—just a brief encounter. You are worthy of more than the scraps of his attention.

  • You Don’t Get a Proper Gift (If Anything At All)

To be honest, Valentine’s Day presents don’t have to be expensive, but a considerate act demonstrates that you’ve been on someone’s mind. You’re not on his priority list if you don’t even receive a basic gift, or if you do receive one that is unimpressive (think of a flower that was snatched at a gas station).

Unfortunately, the unique treatment of obtaining something valuable is not extended to the side chick. Instead, they frequently receive the absolute minimum to maintain appearances or whatever is left over. You can be left with what appears to be an afterthought as he saves his best gestures for someone else.

  • He Insists on “Keeping Things Low Key”

This phrase should raise some red flags: If your guy insists on a “low key” Valentine’s Day, but you know full well that he’s going all out for someone else, it’s a clear indication that you’re not his top priority.

Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year when there is a lot of pressure to show affection, so if he’s keeping things quiet or giving you excuses for why he can’t spend time with you, it’s a sign that you’re the fallback. Side chicks frequently find themselves “kept on the low,” given limited access to his time and attention, especially on high-profile days like Valentine’s day.

  •  He Wants to Keep Things Private (Especially on Social Media)

To show everyone how much they care for one another, many couples share adorable photos or status updates on Valentine’s Day. You may be more of a secret than you’d like to think if he doesn’t post anything about you or even permits you to post about your time together.

You’re almost certain to be the side chick. Side chicks are frequently kept out of the spotlight and are never permitted to represent their relationships in public. There’s a reason if he’s hesitant to publish anything indicating your relationship or be spotted in public with you. He doesn’t want anyone to know about you.

Therefore, it may be time to ask yourself some difficult questions if you notice some or all of these warning signs. Someone who respects you and makes an effort to show you off on special occasions is someone you deserve. Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love—not only the type that occurs behind closed doors. Consider whether you’re truly receiving the affection you deserve if you feel like you’re being kept in the dark. Side chicks should be the main players in their own romantic tales, after all.

Don’t let a hasty date or a brief text make you feel less valuable than that. Perhaps it’s time to find someone who will truly make you feel special—not only on Valentine’s Day, but every day—if he’s treating you poorly on February 14.
