President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to take urgent steps to bridge the funding gap created by US President Donald Trump’s suspension of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) international funding programme.
The funding gap is estimated at a hundred and fifty-six million US dollars.
The statement signed by the Spokesperson to the President and the Minister of State for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, requests the Finance Minister to make arrangements to avert any crisis occasioned by the interruptions to the USAID’s funding.
The projected shortfall of 78.2 million dollars is expected to greatly impact efforts in malaria prevention, maternal and child health, family planning, reproductive health, nutrition and the fight against HIV/AIDS.
After his inauguration, President Trump has signed a number of executive orders, rolling out controversial decisions, including cutting funds to agencies such as the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
