A Senior Lecturer at the History and Political Studies Department of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Dramani Aminu, has stated that the effectiveness of President John Dramani Mahama’s newly appointed Deputy Ministers will only be determined once they begin their duties.
His comments follow the President’s submission of 13 Deputy Minister nominees to Parliament for prior approval. The nominations, in accordance with Articles 78(1) and 79(1) of the Constitution, cover several key ministries including Thomas Nyarko Ampem for the Ministry of Finance, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi for the Ministry of the Interior, and Clement Abas Apaak for the Ministry of Education.
Others are Richard Gyan-Mensah for Energy & Green Transition, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini for Roads & Highways, and Yusif Sulemana for Lands and Natural Resources.
Speaking on Peace FM, Dr. Aminu stressed that the success or failure of the appointees will be evident over time stating “We can only assess their competence when they start working.
“Their performance will ultimately determine whether they contribute meaningfully to national development. If they work well, it will lead to significant progress in their ministries, and Ghanaians will remember them for their contributions,” he stated.
He also reminded the appointees of their responsibility to the public noting “Their salaries come from taxpayers’ hard-earned money. They must work diligently and avoid actions that could lead to financial losses, such as judgment debts,” he cautioned.
On President Mahama’s commitment to running the country with 60 ministers, Dr. Aminu described it as a commendable goal but said exceeding that number would still be acceptable if efficiency is maintained.
“If the President sticks to his promise, it will be impressive. However, even if he slightly exceeds the 60 ministers but ensures efficiency, I would still applaud him,” he noted.
The nominees now await parliamentary approval before assuming office.
