The Republic of Korea has stepped in to provide much-needed relief to thousands of Ghanaians facing acute food insecurity in the northern regions.
The $5 million (over GH¢80 million) contribution to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) will support emergency food and nutrition assistance for 187,000 people affected by prolonged drought conditions.
This intervention comes at a time when Ghana’s northern regions—Bono, Bono East, Oti, Northern, North-East, Savannah, Upper East, and Upper West—are grappling with severe crop and livestock losses due to erratic rainfall patterns.
With food inflation and currency depreciation compounding the crisis, approximately one million people, representing 3% of the country’s population, are at risk of hunger and malnutrition.
A Lifeline for Vulnerable Communities
WFP’s Country Director and Representative in Ghana, Aurore Rusiga, highlighted the urgency of the situation, stressing that soaring food prices and diminishing household stocks have placed families in a dire predicament.
“This funding from the Republic of Korea comes at a crucial time. It will allow us to provide direct cash transfers to families, ensuring that they can access sufficient and nutritious food while navigating this crisis,” she stated.
Through WFP’s intervention, vulnerable households will receive cash assistance, empowering them to purchase food from local markets and sustain themselves until the next harvest season.
The approach is expected to not only provide immediate relief but also support local economies by boosting demand for agricultural produce.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Speaking on the significance of Korea’s support, Park Kyong Sig, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Ghana, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to standing with Ghana during times of crisis.

“As a founding member of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, Korea remains a steadfast friend of Ghana. This contribution demonstrates our dedication to global food security and our belief in international solidarity,” he remarked.
The Republic of Korea’s assistance aligns with its broader commitment to supporting developing nations in overcoming food insecurity.
The donation is part of a strategic collaboration aimed at bolstering Ghana’s food systems, social protection initiatives, and economic resilience in the face of climate-related challenges.

Beyond emergency aid, WFP continues to work with Ghanaian authorities and international partners to implement long-term strategies for food security.

The aid package provides immediate relief, but experts emphasize that sustained investment in climate-smart agriculture and food security policies will be crucial to mitigating similar crises in the future.
