The Electoral Commission has attributed the delay in announcing presidential results to the lack of cooperation among some party agents at the regional collating centres.
Updating Ghanaians on the reason for the delay in declaring the winner of the presidential election, EC Chairperson, Madam Jean Mensa emphasized that the party agents are refusing to cooperate with EC officials at the regional collating centres.
The Chairperson also cited pockets of violence at collation centres and siege of certain collation centres by some party supporters as the reason for the delay in transmitting presidential results to the National Collation Centre.
However, she revealed that the Commission has asked political party leaders to recall their supporters to allow the process to run as expected.
According to her, the only results the commission has received are from the Ahafo region adding they are also receiving results from the Central and Western regions.
Madam Mensa clarified that the EC will declare presidential results from the regions when they have sufficient data.
This means that if the remaining results would not significantly affect the total outcome, the Commission would proceed to officially declare the winner of the presidential election on a provisional basis.
Mrs. Jean Mensah urged Ghanaians to remain calm as the EC awaits results from the regional collation centres soon.
She commended the media, political parties and the general public for their cooperation throughout the electoral process.
She reiterated that the Commission will deliver on its promise to declare results within 72 hours after the close of polls emphasizing it has only been 23 hours since polls closed.
