The Ghana Union Movement (GUM) has strongly criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their mismanagement of the country’s resources.
At a press conference on Sunday, November 10, the party’s founder and leader, Reverend Christian Kwabena Andrews accused both parties of overseeing the sale of state-owned businesses and factories, a move he argues has significantly contributed to the country’s rising youth unemployment.
The Press Conference was held under the theme: Throwing back the bad governance of the NDC and NPP.
According to him, the privatization of these state assets along with the failure to revive defunct state enterprises have worsened the employment situation, leaving many young people without opportunities.
“If you people are not aware, they come in with their selfish gain, they loot and share and vamoose.” Reverend Andrews stated “Former president John Agyekum took power from NDC and he supervised the sale of many factories in this country. How can we sit down, and continue to look on? Don’t you know that it is going to affect you and me? We are suffering”
Reverend Andrews urged the youth to reconsider their future and vote for change, calling on them to reject the long-standing political duopoly of the NPP and NDC.
He also criticized the slow pace of development since the beginning of the Fourth Republic in 1992 and called for a complete overhaul of the 1992 Constitution.
Rev. Andrews described the current system as a borrowed model from the West emphasizing it is unsuitable for Ghana and suggested that a “Hybrid African Democracy” would be more appropriate.
In addition to its political reforms, the GUM called for a reduction in the size of Parliament, citing the high cost of maintaining the 275 Members of Parliament and other officeholders as a drain on the national economy.
Look at the parliament. The number of people that are in parliament is outrageous … if I get the power, I’ll reduce it from 275 to 60. We have regional ministers… Why can’t one MP manage one region? Have you seen any of these two governments coming out to say that I’m putting a fabric factory or maybe a shoe factory? None of them. GUM is ready to fight and fight on.”
Reverend Andrews called on the media to help amplify the party’s message and enhance its visibility among the electorates.
