The National Executive Council (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has called on its members to suspend the strike they embarked on as part of efforts to end illegal mining activities in Ghana.
The strike, which began on the 10th of October, 2024 was to pile pressure on the government to take measures to end the existential threat of illegal mining also known as Galamsey and curb its effects on the environment and Ghanaians. The strike was endorsed by the 15-member campuses, and severely impacted academic activities across the country.
In addition to the strike, the association demanded that the government revoke the Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462 which permitted mining in forest reserves and on water bodies.

A statement signed by the National President and the National Secretary revealed that the association has also developed a pact for 2024 presidential candidates in order to secure their commitment to combat the menace and discussions with the various stakeholders to append their signatures are ongoing.
However, the 15 constituent member campuses must vote either to accept or reject the directive to suspend the strike action on Tuesday October 29.
Meanwhile, UTAG expressed gratitude to its members and various stakeholders for their support in pursuit of a sustainable future for Ghana.
