The Ministry of Information, in collaboration with the Central Regional Coordinating Council, has hosted the Central Regional Edition of the Townhall Meetings and Exhibition to highlight the government’s achievements in the region.
The event showcased completed and ongoing development projects across various districts and municipalities.
Speaking at the event, Central Regional Minister, Justina Marigold Assan, emphasized the government’s strides in education, agriculture, and infrastructure, noting the significant job creation efforts in the region, particularly for the youth.
“We have a lot of pictures to show you of the road infrastructure in the Central Region, In agriculture, fisheries, and economic development, the Central Region is producing rice known as ‘Central Rice,’ which is rich in nutrients.
“Under the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative, over 21,000 farmers have been registered, and we’ve distributed fertilizers and improved seeds to help them produce better crops for all of us to enjoy.”
Madam Marigold Assan further highlighted the government’s industrial initiatives, saying, “We have the ‘One District, One Warehouse’ program, with seven warehouses completed in the region, and under ‘One District, One Factory,’ we’ve completed 11 projects, with 13 more in various stages of completion. Gomoa East is becoming an industrial hub with over six factories. We even have our own rice mill at Akropong to support farmers.”
She also spoke about employment generation, adding, “We can proudly talk about the Elmina fishing harbour and the creation of more than 15,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region, offering decent employment opportunities.”
Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the fisheries sector’s vital role in job creation, poverty reduction, and food security.
“The fisheries and agriculture sectors play a significant role in the economic development of our country by providing employment, contributing to GDP, and enhancing national food and nutritional security,” she explained.
“More than three million people are employed along the value chain of the sector. Its contribution aligns directly with key Sustainable Development Goals, including Goals 1, 2, 3, 8, and 14.”
Madam Koomson also outlined government initiatives to promote sustainability in the fisheries sector, revealing that the government has implemented programs and policies aimed at sustainable development and the enforcement of fisheries laws.
“We recently trained 1,363 stakeholders on fish certification and licensing schemes to ensure hygienic and safe fish consumption. The Ministry remains committed to collaborating with key stakeholders to ensure growth and sustainability in the sector,” she noted.
The town hall meeting and exhibition brought together ministers, traditional and religious leaders, District and Municipal Chief Executives, students, and various groups in the region to exchange ideas on development projects.
