The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Concern Drivers Union have thrown their support to organize Labour’s declaration of an intended nationwide strike effective October 10, 2024.
The two transport unions said their decision is informed by the need to have a common and united front to combat illegal mining which is destroying water bodies and forest reserves.
This decision of GPRTU and its counterpart, the Concerns Drivers Association follows the organized labours’ declaration of an industrial strike nationwide amidst the government’s failure to meet their many concerns including the declaration of a state of emergency on all forms of mining in the quest to avert the looming danger associated with the menace.
Speaking to JOYNEWS, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of GPRTU, Alhaji Abass Imoro said their readiness to back the nationwide strike is to fight a right course affecting the entire country.
He, therefore called on their members to fully participate in the strike action come October 10 to demand action from the government.
“Come on the 10th, all GPRTU nationwide will lay down our tools. Nobody will work. We operate all over the 16 regions. Undisputedly, we are the leading transport operators as well. And I strongly believe we are not doing this for GPRTU, but we are doing this for Mother Ghana.”
By coming out again, don’t expect only GPRTU. We will expect all transport operators as well. If nothing changes, that’s exactly what everybody should expect until otherwise.
“On the 10th of this very October, no vehicle is moving. We will sit down and demonstrate. We will not move our vehicle.”
“We will not let anybody, any petrol truck or vehicle move into the country. If organized labour and TUC are doing this to save Mother Ghana, we will all join hands by parking our cars as a whole nation. This is not a vehicle issue,” he said.
