The University of Cape Coast has been ranked by the prestigious U.S. News and World Report Global Universities Rankings as the best (No. 1) university in Ghana, and among the best in Africa and globally.
This is out of 2,250 universities which were ranked in the 2024-2025 U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings.
In this maiden appearance, UCC has emerged once again as a National, Regional and Global leading Institution of Excellence.
The U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings is one of the most respected rankings in the World. In the United States of America in particular, its Rankings are regarded as the most prestigious that provide insight into how universities compare globally, which is critical for benchmarking.
The Rankings Agency uses stringent criteria to assess universities’ academic reputation, research quality and output, global outlook, employer reputation, student-to-faculty ratio, citations and international diversity.
It uses 13 indicators to measure global research performance and reputation of universities. The bibliometric indicators used in the 2024-2025 U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings analyses are based on data from Web of Science for the five-year period spanning 2018 to 2022.
To be eligible for ranking, an institution must meet a minimum threshold of at least 1,250 papers published from 2018 to 2022 in Web of Science indexed journals. The Web of Science is a scientific web-based research database by Clarivate that covers more than 22,000 of the most influential and authoritative scholarly journals worldwide in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities. Web of Science is the topmost scientific indexation in scientific publications.
It is a multidisciplinary scholarly database which contains carefully selected rigorous peer-reviewed journals in all disciplines.
According to the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings, the research output component of the ranking is assessed based on Scientific Excellence Indicators, which comprises the number of highly cited papers that are among the top 1% most cited in their respective field, and the percentage of total publications that are among the top 1% most highly cited papers.
This achievement is consistent with the vision of the University: “to be a globally acclaimed University for innovative teaching, research, outreach and professional development.”
This ranking reflects the strategic investments made by the University’s Management over the years.
The feat further demonstrates the significant steps undertaken by the University in assisting emerging researchers through financial support (Research Support Grants), implement of the University’s strategic Research Agenda and facilitating the pursuit of impactful research initiatives such as publishing in credible outlets.
The University’s consistent achievement as the Topmost Ranked University in Ghana and among the top universities in Africa and globally in two most prestigious global universities rankings: Times Higher Education World University Rankings and U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings is also a testament of its research excellence.
