The National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has expressed the party’s firm stance against any attempts to undermine the independence of Ghana’s Electoral Commission.
In an interview monitored by ATL FM News, Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, criticized the opposition party’s call for an independent forensic audit of the voters’ register.
Nana B described the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s demand as unnecessary, pointing out that the Electoral Commission is an autonomous body, established and mandated by law to conduct its operations without interference.
He emphasized that the NPP will not support the engagement of any external entity to audit the voters’ register, as it would be a breach of the Commission’s independence.
Additionally, Nana B suggested that the NDC’s refusal to present evidence for their claims of irregularities in the voters’ register appeared malicious and only served to sow doubt in the electoral process.
He reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to protecting the credibility and autonomy of the Electoral Commission in the lead-up to future elections.
“If you say that you have some 240,000 illegal transfers, it is a serious allegation. And he who alleges must prove, bring evidence, you say no, you will not. How can a political party behave in this manner? We are saying that bring this evidence, submit it, and all of us will scrutinize it. But if you say that you are keeping it to your chest, you are not,” he continued.
Nana B also reiterated that the NPP will oppose any form of interference in the Commission’s operations, despite acknowledging that there may be a few challenges with the current voters’ register.
He emphasized that while the party recognizes some issues with the register, they remain committed to allowing the Electoral Commission to function independently, as mandated by law.
He noted that the NPP firmly believes in the integrity of the Commission and its role in ensuring free and fair elections, and any attempts to undermine that autonomy will be met with strong resistance.
