The Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Dr. Sir Sam Esson Jonah has lauded the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his exemplary leadership, particularly in harmonizing traditional and modern governance.
Speaking at a special congregation where the Asantehene was conferred with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree (honoris causa), Dr. Jonah remarked that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has masterfully balanced the cultural and contemporary aspects of leadership, making him a prominent figure in our national landscape.
Dr. Jonah further praised the Asantehene’s commitment to national development, highlighting his numerous contributions, revealing “His dedication to the nation’s progress is evident through the remarkable initiatives he has championed.”
Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, elaborated on the criteria for receiving the honorary degree, stressing the importance of Otumfuo’s achievements.
“The Asantehene’s impact on both traditional leadership and modern governance exemplifies the values we uphold as an institution,” Prof. Boampong said.
Delivering his acceptance speech, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Dr. Osei Tutu II called for a comprehensive re-examination of Ghana’s education system stating “While various governments have attempted reforms, financial constraints and other challenges have often limited their impact.”
“There have been numerous reviews of the system, but many have fallen short due to a lack of resources and other obstacles,” he stated.
Dr. Osei Tutu II stressed the importance of addressing both structural and practical issues to ensure meaningful reform emphasizing “We need a more holistic approach to revamp our education sector, one that equips students with the skills necessary for future challenges.”
His Royal Majesty’s comments come at a crucial time when there are widespread calls for significant reforms in the educational sector, with Otumfuo emphasizing, “For the country’s development, we must enrich and reform our educational system to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world.”
The event was massively attended by people from all walks of life, who adorned themselves in beautiful traditional regalia to celebrate the occasion.
