The 2024 ATL FM Oguaa Fetu Afahye Regatta, held yesterday at the Cape Coast Community Garden, drew a massive crowd, including traditional rulers, residents, and visitors who gathered to support their favorite Asafo teams.
This annual event, a central part of the 60th Oguaa Fetu Afahye celebration, features a thrilling canoe race between the three main Asafo Companies: Nkum Number 4, Bentsir Number 1, and Anaafo Number 2.
Themed “Celebrating the City of The First,” the festival aims to engage everyone, young and old, while promoting unity among the citizens of Cape Coast.
The celebrations, which began on Monday, September 2nd, will continue through Saturday with a variety of programs marking the festival’s climax.
Reflecting on the event’s success, Emmanuel Buckman, a member of the ATL FM Events Committee, shared his thoughts in an interview with ATL FM NEWS stating, “The turnout was one of a kind, encouraging the public to anticipate an even better event next year.
As part of ATL FM’s commitment to supporting the local fishing industry and fostering unity among the Asafo companies, the regatta has become a cherished tradition.
The second day of the 2024 Oguaa Fetu Afahye festivities saw an impressive mix of attendees, including not only traditional leaders but also a diverse crowd of residents, students, security personnel, vendors, and international tourists.
The competition was fierce as the Asafo Companies vied for top honors, with Nkum Number 4 emerging victorious, receiving a cash prize, medals, and a trophy, while Anaafo Number 2 secured the second position and Bentsir Number 1 took third place.
Speaking to ATL FM NEWS, Francis Adu, a proud member of Nkum Asafo No. 4, expressed his joy at their victory stating, “I am overjoyed that we won the lagoon race competition,” he said, emphasizing their well-built, hardworking, and highly motivated team.
He also addressed rumors surrounding the race results, firmly stating, “The results were not rigged. Our consistent wins over the past two years have naturally led to envy, but our legacy speaks for itself.” Looking ahead, Adu confidently declared, “Next year, we will still emerge as winners.”
The regatta continues to serve as a testament to ATL FM’s dedication to community and culture, bringing together people from all walks of life to celebrate Cape Coast’s rich traditions.
