Bisease Community Senior High and Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High have emerged champions of the Central and Western Region Zone 3, 2024 STEMNNOVATION Roadshow, held in Cape Coast.
Bisease Community Senior High clinched the overall Central regional championship with 358 points while Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High secured the overall Western regional championship with 296 points, winning awards for the best entrepreneurial project, best food sovereignty project, and best environmental sustainability project.
The Zone 3 STEMNNOVATION Roadshow featured 28 Senior High Schools (SHS), Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS), and Technical and Vocational Education Training Schools (TVET) from the Central and Western regions.
Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High impressed judges with a project focused on environmentally sustainable methods of purifying water contaminated by illegal mining (Galamsey) while Bisease Community Senior High presented a project on sustainable and cost-effective fuel aimed at improving air quality.
In an interview with ATL FM NEWS, Mr. Katakyie Kwame Opoku Agyemang, the Free SHS Regional Coordinator for the Central Region, emphasized the importance of STEMNNOVATION, stating, “STEMNNOVATION allows students to apply the theory they learn in practical ways. The era of rote learning is over. We are now in the age of artificial intelligence and digitalization, where we need practical solutions to real-world problems.”
Comparing STEMNNOVATION with the National Science and Maths Quiz, he noted, “The National Science and Maths Quiz is more theoretical, but STEMNNOVATION is about designing projects that solve specific problems.
“Whether it’s filtering dirty water or developing new technologies, this competition fosters creativity and problem-solving skills. The national competition in November will allow these students to showcase their work on a larger stage, and some may even earn scholarships abroad or pursue technical programs at universities.”
The winners of the roadshow expressed their excitement to ATL FM NEWS with Alberta Obeny Asamoah and Flora Piedu Okran from Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High sharing their joy, saying, “We were nervous going into the competition, seeing the impressive projects from other schools. But to emerge as winners of the Western Region is incredible.
“This experience has made us more critical thinkers and better researchers. We’re proud of our project to purify water affected by Galamsey and to show that we can turn a challenge into a solution.”
Nene Adante Joshua from Bisease Community Senior High added, “It feels amazing to be part of the STEM Innovation Program. It encourages us, the younger generation, to use our creativity and imagination to solve today’s problems.
“We presented a project on environmental sustainability and provided a clear alternative to reduce health risks. We expect the best from STEMNNOVATION and hope it continues to improve and inspire more students,” he said.
