Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has called on the current government to remain in Ghana and be accountable to the people after their term ends in 2025.
Addressing residents of Kasseh in ADA during a community engagement, he emphasized that anyone who chooses to serve in public office must be prepared to face scrutiny and answer to the citizens once their tenure is over.
Reflecting on his own experience, Mr. Mahama stated, “I finished as president; I stayed here in this country and announced that I am prepared to be accountable to the people. I should be investigated for anything I have done while in office. And I stayed here and have been accountable to the people.”
He urged members of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration to follow his example stating “I hope that those who are going out of office, the MPP government, when they go out, they should stay in the country. Nobody should run away. They should stay in the country and account to the people of Ghana.”
Mr. Mahama also seized the opportunity to criticize the current government, accusing it of plunging the country into hardship over the past eight years revealing “This administration has sent our nation 10 years back. We cannot pay our debts. We cannot buy simple commodities that we even produce ourselves because they are too expensive. We are begging the world to forgive us our debts. We’ve given haircuts to bondholders. Our cedi is depreciating every day.”
He also commented on Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent media engagement, suggesting that it was a deliberate attempt to overshadow the NDC’s manifesto launch.
“Immediately after we announced that we were going to launch our manifesto on the 24th of August, our opponents announced a media encounter on the 25th. The intention was to divert attention from the NDC manifesto,” Mr. Mahama said.
However, he warned that such tactics often backfire, highlighting that “When you do something with devious intention, it backfires on you. You know someone is lying when they, usually smooth talkers, suddenly start stammering. The fundamentals are weak, and it shows.”
He concluded by reminding Ghanaians of the importance of the upcoming election, framing it as a critical choice between progress and regression. noting that “On 7th December, as we have done since 1992, all of us will be required to make a choice. It is the choice to go forward or the choice to continue going backward.”
