The Progressive Intellectuals (PI), a group comprising university academics, researchers, and administrators in Ghana, has expressed strong support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following the launch of its Youth Manifesto.
The group has welcomed former President John Dramani Mahama’s pledge to exempt Level 100 students in public universities from paying academic fees, a policy that aligns with their social democratic principles.
PI emphasized that this initiative, which would benefit over 45,000 students nationwide by reducing the financial burden on parents and guardians, reflects their eagerness to collaborate with the NDC and other political parties that prioritize making higher education more accessible for the youth and improving the quality of Ghana’s education system.
In their press release dated August 20, 2024, PI called on the NDC to engage with key stakeholders, including the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), public and private universities, technical universities, and other educational institutions, to ensure the successful implementation of this policy.
The group also expressed their openness to further discussions on enhancing the education system in Ghana.
PI’s endorsement of the NDC’s free tertiary education proposal underscores their commitment to advancing national development through education.
